Run system updates

Essential before installing anything. On Mac: Settings > General > Software Update. On Windows: Windows Update.

Name your computer

Avoid default names like 'User-MacBook-Pro'. Choose something cool and recognizable for network sharing (Ex: 'Mothership' or 'Pierre-Laptop').

Enable disk encryption (BitLocker / FileVault)

Create a spare Administrator account
